KnowEsis Training and Workshops
The Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture Fedora is a very powerful and complex platform for applications in the field of Open Access, collaborative research and scientific communication, museums, e-learning, and libraries. It is not an out-of-the-box solution. Instead, building applications with Fedora usually requires a substantial amount of software development. Additionally, the Fedora platform is a new kind of software (sometimes tagged as SOAR: Service-Oriented Architecture Repository), which requires expertise to understand the concepts behind the system and to fully leverage its features.
FIZ Karlsruhe has gained a lot of experience over the last few years in working with the Fedora software. We demonstrate our expertise in projects like eSciDoc, in which Fedora plays an important role. We are closely cooperating with the Fedora Core Development Team and we are members of the Fedora Commons advisory bodies. Additionally, we have launched a successful series of Fedora-related workshops.

Fedora - Planned Workshops
FIZ Karlsruhe is currently planning further Fedora Workshops. A Fedora Beginner's Workshop (to be held in German) will be announced in early 2008. More workshops requiring a more technical background will be organized later in 2008.

Fedora - Past Workshops
- Fedora Disseminator Workshop May 2007
FIZ Karlsruhe held a Fedora Disseminator Workshop on Monday, May 7-8, 2007 at FIZ Karlsruhe, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany.
Invited speakers were Carl Lagoze (Cornell University) and Matt Zumwalt (MediaShelf, LLC).
One of the many advantages of Fedora lies in its ability to associate the data in a digital object with web services to produce dynamic disseminations. However, this powerful feature is seldom used. The workshop's goal was to help participants better understand the mechanics of disseminators and how to use them in their projects. On the first day, Carl Lagoze gave an introduction to disseminators. We reserved time for in-depth discussion of questions and real-world examples brought up by the participants.
On the second day of the workshop, Matt Zumwalt gave a very interactive introduction to XForms. One of the primary barriers to adoption of Fedora is the difficulty in deploying custom frontends to the system. Matt is currently refining techniques that leverage XForms and Fedora disseminators that address this challenge. The workshop was targeted at users of Fedora who are already familiar with Fedora’s general concepts and want to gain a deeper insight into the disseminator architecture.

The Fedora Content Model Workshop was held on May 4-5, 2006 at FIZ Karlsruhe, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany.
Invited speakers were Sandy Payette and Carl Lagoze (both from Cornell University).
The workshop was targeted at users of Fedora who were already familiar with Fedora’s general concepts and wanted to gain a deeper insight into its content model. This interactive event included presentations by the participants outlining their Fedora related projects and work, especially in the domain of content models.
