Digital Rights Management (DRM)

DRM is a technology that enables the secure distribution and sale of digital media-content.

This technical protection measure involves the use of some form of encryption and access control mechanism. It allows publishers and copyright holders to manage the access to copyrighted content, to control or limit usage as well as the further processing and distribution of digital media.

DRM systems will:

  • control how often the document can be accessed (mostly once).
  • control how often the document can be printed (mostly once).
  • control how long the document will be available on the DRM server of the corresponding document supplier (in general 14-30 days).
  • not permit a document to be saved at all.
  • alert the user if permission has been denied.

PDF delivery without DRM

The following FIZ AutoDoc document suppliers currently use various DRM systems:

  • BLDSC (British Library Document Supply Centre)
  • BSB (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek)
  • CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information)
  • Infotrieve
  • INIST (Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique)
  • Reprints Desk
  • TIB (Technische Informationsbibliothek)

Important:

  • The different DRM Systems might cause problems when used simultaneously depending on your local software and hardware environment.
  • Please make sure that you activate the appropriate DRM system before you try to open the corresponding PDF document.
  • If you are a first-time user,  please try the test documents of our DRM suppliers first.
  • Because of the limited time an ordered document is available at the supplier's server, do not order it, if you cannot open it within the given timeframe.
